At Stanley Black & Decker, we recognize that technological innovation is changing the world at an exponentially accelerating pace and that being at the forefront of this disruption is essential to success. We view investing in breakthrough innovation as mission-critical — to disrupt rather than to be disrupted.
Ten Breakthrough Teams Across Our Enterprise
Around the globe, located in various innovation hubs where commercial, startup and academic resources meet, we have launched breakthrough innovation centers dedicated to ensuring that each of our businesses — including engineered fastening, oil and gas, hydraulics, tools and storage, and now electronic security — are developing the most innovative, game-changing solutions in the marketplace.
Futures Innovation Factory
Futures Innovation Factory launched in mid-2017, dedicated to advancing technological innovation in STANLEY Security’s business. The group focuses on uncovering disruptive business models and exploring technologies to transform and secure our world. The team concentrates on automation, additive manufacturing and artificial intelligence in the security space, working when appropriate in concert with our Digital Accelerator and STANLEY Ventures to support the rapid commercialization of breakthrough technologies.
Futures Innovation Factory is housed in a new space located at the Innovation and Design Building in Boston’s Seaport District, a center for startup activity and advanced research, adjacent to the innovation operations of technology and industrial leaders, as well as MassChallenge, a nonprofit partner focused on startup business acceleration. The STANLEY Security team will have the opportunity to pursue ideas and tap into MassChallenge and other resources for inspiration and collaboration.
FLEXVOLT, the revolutionary battery technology that delivers corded power and makes the cordless jobsite possible, has been a phenomenal success with a product offering that totals approximately 25 tools. FLEXVOLT runs high power 60V tools (or 120V in pairs), but can also run 20V power tools three times as long (in amp hours) as a standard battery.
DEWALT continues to expand its FLEXVOLT and overall market-leading cordless offerings to deliver growth in 2018 and beyond.
FLEXVOLT 60V MAX* 7-1/4 in. Cordless Worm Drive Style Circular Saw
This powerful saw features optimized line of sight with a left side blade and the handle positioned at the rear of the saw. It makes smooth, accurate cuts with a durable, high grade magnesium shoe, and it delivers long runtime with an efficient brushless motor.
FLEXVOLT 60V MAX* 2.5 Gallon Cordless Air Compressor
This powerful compressor, made in the USA with global materials, offers all the convenience and portability of cordless, while letting professionals continue using the pneumatic tools they already have, effectively making all pneumatic tools battery-powered. Each battery charge allows for driving up to 1,220 nails, providing the runtime to complete a variety of applications.
*Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 4, 20, 60 and 120 volts. Nominal voltage is 3.6, 18, 54 and 108.

The investment portfolio includes Prieto Battery, Freewire Technologies, Redpoint Positioning, VizExplorer, Veloxint, 3XLogic, DreamHammer, Viakoo, ConnectMyEv, Sunflower Labs, and Pillo. Partnering with STANLEY Ventures helps early-stage businesses advance great ideas to meet their full potential and maximize their value by developing and integrating their innovations into our businesses.
Future of Innovation
We are establishing a group in Silicon Valley dedicated to exploring ways to transform our global enterprise into an “exponential” organization. In these early stages, it will focus on accelerating the development of disruptive, breakthrough solutions and the rapid commercialization of such innovations that do not have a natural commercialization pathway within our existing business models or would be constrained from successfully scaling with the speed required for success if incubated within our core organization. A breakthrough like FLEXVOLT — our revolutionary power-of-corded battery technology — fits neatly and naturally within the core commercialization expertise of the Tools & Storage team. Other breakthroughs in development, however, can take us into, or even create, entirely new categories.
This organization will look to partner externally to help formulate, scale and commercialize offerings, while also having the mandate to work closely with our established businesses as well as our new Chief Technology Officer, the Digital Accelerator, our Breakthrough Innovation teams, and Stanley Ventures. The group will incubate and advance disruptive solutions that our investments in breakthrough thinking are making possible.
